What's In A Name: A History of the Village of Vaimalō in Vava'u

Editor's Note: This is a highly significant but truly exciting slice of the history of Tonga. Amongst many other things, it provides us with a window into our complex yet important past especially the contact with Europe. It makes real sense of the concept and practice of naming as in the case of naming of the village of Vaimalō in rememberance of the two-way exchanges between the locals and foreigners. This is also refelected in the old and most beautiful names such as Naufahu Māpilitoa, Tevita Taʻofi-kae-tau, Lavinia Sialehaehae and Paluleleva-he-'i-moana of people who were geneologically related and associated with this most beautiful portion of our common history.
