Community-based inventorying and transmission of intangible cultural heritage workshop opened in Tongatapu Featured
12 August, 2019. The Ministry of Tourism today marks the Opening of the Community-based Inventorying and Transmission of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) workshop in the Island of Tongatapu. The workshop acknowledges the beginning of Phase 1 of this Project, funded by UNSESCO.

The Opening was graced with the presence of the Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism, Hon. Semisi Kioa Lafu Sika and other representatives from the donor and working partners of the Ministry; Mrs. Lucy Moala-Mafi, the Acting CEO for the Ministry of Education and Training & UNESCO NATCOM Secretary; with Dr. Seuúla Johansson Fua-Fonua, the Director for Institute of Education at the University of the South Pacific and the Vice-Chair for the ICH National Task Force attending on behalf of the ICH National Task Force’s Chairman, Mr. Sipiriano Neamani Ranuku, Director of Fiji Museum and UNSESCO certified ICH Community-based Information Gathering, and Rev. Dr. Tevita Tapueluelu who led and closed the programme with prayers.
The CEO for Tourism, Mr. Sione Finau Moala-Mafi welcomed the Acting Prime Minister, special guests and participants. He continue to emphasize the importance of having this training opportunity for Tonga in its endeavour to safeguard cultural heritage. He also stated that Tongan culture still remain as the prominent product that entice tourists to visits our Island Kingdom.

The workshop will run for 5 days starting Monday 12th – Friday 16th August, 2019 at the Ministry of Tourism conference room at Fanga ‘o Pilolevu with twelve (12) field workers. The workshop focuses on training these 12 participants who will go out and collect information on ICH from villages of Tongatapu in the next four months. The workshop facilitator is Mr. Sipiriano Neamani Ranuku, Director of Fiji Museum and UNSESCO certified ICH Community-based Information Gathering, trainer.
