Japanese Speech Contest for Japanese Language Learners Featured

The Embassy of Japan, the Ministry of Education of Tonga in cooperation with JICA Tonga Office and Japanese Language Teachers’ Association of Tonga successfully completed Japanese Speech Contest for secondary school and open category at the St, Andrew’s School Hall this afternoon Thursday 14th May 2015.

The contest is part of the endeavor to develop and encourage the learning and teaching of Japanese Language in the kingdom. Seven schools took part in the contest which were Tonga High School, Tonga College, Vava’u High School, ‘Eua High School, Tailulu College, Lavengamalie College and Tonga International Academy.

The Guest of Honor was the Acting Director of Education Mr. Claude Tupou who presented prizes for the winners of the contest. Prize winners went as follows;

Form 4 Level won by Fonohema Solomone, Tonga College
Form 5 Level won by Paea Vaiangina, Tailulu College
Form 6 Level won by 'Alisi Uhi, Tonga High School
Form 7 Level won by Linda Hiupeti, Tonga High School, 2nd Lea'aetoa fatai, Vava’u High School
Open Category won by Vava’u High School, 2nd Tonga International Academy & 3rd Lavengamalie College

Arden ‘o Halekulani Fatai of Vava'u High School Winner of Japanese Language Scholarship

The prize for the winner of the open category is a scholarship to study Japanese language in Japan went to the Arden ‘o Halekulani Fatai representative from Vava’u High School.

His Excellency Mr. Yukio Numata , Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga in his speech acknowledged the improvement in the study of Japanese language in Tonga since its introduction in 1986. Ambassador Numata stated that only one school joined the inaugural program but it has now increased to six schools.

The Guest of honor Mr. Claude Tupou emphasised the importance of studing Japanese language at secondary schools in Tonga and the Ministry of Education fully supports the program. Among the participants were parents, principals and staff members of secondary schools involved.
