Nuku'alofa, 18 May, 2015. Prime Minister, Hon. Samuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva departed for Japan on the weekend, to attend the Seventh Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM7).
Leaders from Japan and Pacific Island Forum (PIF) Member States, including Tonga will meet in Tokyo and Iwaki City from 21-23 May, 2015 to review and work out Japan’s assistance program in relation to disaster risk management.
PIF members include leaders and representatives from Australia, Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, FSM, Nauru, New Zealand, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.
PALM7 is co-chaired by Japan’s Prime Minister H.E. Mr. Shinzo Abe, and H.E. Mr. Tommy E. Remengesau, Jr., President of Palau.
Tonga’s Prime Minister is expected to hold bilateral talks with high-level leaders and Japanese Foreign Minister Kishida, to address the issues of direct relevance to bilateral and multilateral relations with Japan. Such issues include the environment, climate change and disaster management, human security, maritime order and resource management, trade/investment promotion for economic nation building, disaster reconstruction, and local economy promotion.
During the Prime Minister’s visit, he will also meet with members of the Tongan Community, and University Students from the Nippon Sports Science University.
Tonga’s delegation to PALM7 includes Chief Secretary and Secretary to Cabinet, Dr. Palenitina Langa’oi; Foreign Affairs Secretary, Mr. Va’inga Tone; and Director of National Emergency Management Office (NEMO), Mr. Leveni ‘Aho. The Kingdom of Tonga’s Ambassador to Japan, H.E.Ms. Tania Tupou will be Head of Mission to PALM7.
The delegation returns to Tonga on the 27 May, 2015.
