Doctors relaxed in Tonga though Covid patient still 'weak positive'

6 November, 2021. Health officials have again tested a man who arrived on a repatriation flight from Christchurch last week and found he had a weak form of the virus.

This followed a positive test a week ago and another on Wednesday which was negative.

Health official from the Ministry of Health in Tonga, said the doctors, speaking at a media conference this afternoon, were relaxed about it.

"The doctor explained it was what he called a very weak virus, it was not going to do any harm because of the person having been vaccinated, and it was not going to have any effect in terms of him having any symptoms and all of that - so they felt quite positive," he said

The Covid scare - the first case of the virus in Tonga - sparked a lockdown on the main island of Tongatapu.

But despite the latest revelation the lockdown is to stay in place for the allowed for seven day period, finishing on Monday night.

Moala also said the other people in isolation, both those from the flight and the local essential staff, will be tested again on Sunday.

He said if they are all negative they could be released early from their scheduled 21 days of isolation.
