MEIDECC conducted training for first responders in Ha’apai Featured
18 November 2020. The Department of National Emergency Management Office (NEMO) under the Ministry of MEIDECC conducted a training for first responders in Ha’apai yesterday at the newly constructed Center for Multi-Hazard Early Warning and Emergency Operation, Pangai, Ha’apai.
The half-day training aims to familiarize first responders with the new emergency operation office and go through their roles in preparation for the 2020/2021 cyclone season.
Director of NEMO Mr. Mafua Maka said preparation is paramount for Ha’apai’s first responders.
“There are few of us from NEMO’s Office in Tongatapu who are in Ha’apai to assist first responders as we are in the beginning of the cyclone season. First responders need to prepare themselves to face the worst-case scenario and to know what roles they play in an emergency operation.”
Acting Officer in Charge of the Ministry MEIDECC for Ha’apai Ms. Lu’isa Taunga said similar trainings have been conducted before, but with the fully equipped new operation center it is vital that they gathered to look at their state of readiness and how the center is set up before an emergency.
The new constructed Centre for Multi-Hazard Early Warning Emergency Operation in Ha’apai was commissioned last week and it is well equipped with advance technology and tools that will assist first responders in times of disaster.
