Man Arrested in Tonga over Sydney Murders Featured
28 October, 2015. A man in Tonga is facing extradition to Australia over the 25-year-old murders of millionaire Sydney doctor Michael Chye and his sister Rita Caleo.
Alani Afu was arrested on the South Pacific island on September 29 after Australian police requested his extradition to NSW.
"Mr Afu is waiting to face prosecution in New South Wales for one offence of murder," the Attorney-General's department told AAP on Tuesday.
Dr Chye, 36, was shot three times as he drove his Mercedes-Benz into the garage of his Woollahra home in October 1989.
Rita Caleo was murdered in her luxury Double Bay flat in August 1990, just days after a $50,000 reward was offered for information about her brother's unsolved murder.
The 39-year-old mother was stabbed in the stomach in her bedroom en suite while her daughters, aged six months and four, slept in the next room.
Two Sydney men, who cannot be named, were last year charged with arranging the murders.
The Attorney-General's department would not comment on the allegations against Afu because the matter is before the courts in Tonga.
