GC2018: Members of Team Tonga competes in Boxing, Lawn Bowls and Swimming on Day 1 Featured
5 April, 2018. Members of Team Tonga from Boxing, Lawn Bowls and Swimming commence their respective competition and event on Day 1 of the XXI Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast, Thursday 5th April.
Finau ‘Ohuafi competed in the Men’s 50m Butterfly in which he came fourth in his heat and missed out on a place for the second round.
Malia Kioa competed in Ladies’ Single and was up against the current world champion, Karen Murphy of Australia and lost.
However, Malia bounced back and won her second match today beating Getrude Siame of Zambia, 21 to 11.
It was Tonga’s first win in Lawn Bowls at the Commonwealth Games level.
Malia will play again her second round tomorrow, against Colleen Piketh of South Africa and follows by her second match against Catherine Beattie of Northern Ireland.
In boxing, John Moleni lost a split decision to Stephen Newns in his first fight in the Men’s 69kg.
Next up tomorrow, Friday 7th April, will be Salote Huni against Millicent Agboegbulen of Nigeria in the Women’s 75kg and follows by Samuela Kei against Arsene Fosso of Cameroon in the Men’s +91kg.
Despite the loss by Moleni, the team is in good spirit and continue to prepare and train well for their respective events and competitions.
