4 May, 2017. On May 4 -5, 2017, the Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (AFPPD) will participate in the International G7/20 Parliamentarians’ Conference in Rome, Italy.

The AFPPD delegation is comprised of 13 Members of Parliament from Japan,India, Kazakhstan, the Philippines, Thailand, Tonga, Vietnam, Nepal, New Zealand and Tajikistan. All are members of the AFPPD Executive Committee and Co-Chairs of AFPPD Standing Committees.

Co-organized by the European Parliamentary Forum on Population and Development (EPF), the Italian All Party Parliamentary Group on Global Health and Women's Rights, and Associazione Italiana Donne Per LoSviluppo (AIDOS), this year’s G7 International Parliamentarians’ Conference will gather parliamentarians from all regions to address critical issues related to migration, women’s empowerment, and Universal Health Coverage (UHC) including sexual reproductive health and rights (SRHR).

The role of parliamentarians in supporting development policies towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will also be stressed. The conference is expected to conclude with the adoption of the Parliamentarians’ Appeal to G7 Heads of State, prior to the 43rd G7 Summit in Sicily, Italy.

Last year, over 140 Members of Parliament from 64 countries adopted the GCPPD Declaration and Recommendations to the G7 at the G7 Global Conference of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (GCPPD), co-organized by AFPPD and the Japan Parliamentary Federation for Population in Tokyo, Japan.

The recommendations were reflected in the G7 Ise-Shima Leaders’ Declaration and other outcome documents, particularly in relation to UHC, SRHR, women’s empowerment, active ageing, migration, and climate change.

Regional parliamentary networks are increasingly influencing politically in agenda-setting for global fora such as the G7 and G20 Summits.

Background: AFPPD is a network of 29 parliamentary committees from across the Asia-Pacific region. AFPPD advocates for parliamentary action and change, in support of population and development issues: gender equality and women’s empowerment including sexual and reproductive health and rights; investing in youth; active ageing; and population dynamics
