GGP Project signed for Houma Village Water Supply System

8 December, 2022. The Grant Contract formalizing Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Project (GGP), to upgrade the Water Supply System for the village of Houma was signed on Friday, 2nd December 2022 at the Ministry of Finance, in Nuku‘alofa.

 

H.E. Mr. MUNENAGA Kensaku, Ambassador of Japan to Tonga and Mr. Semisi Naitoko Vuna, Town Officer and Chairperson of the Water Committee for Houma signed on the Grant Contract in the presence of Hon. Tiofilusi Tiueti, Minister for Finance and Minister for Revenue and Customs. Attended also were members of the Water Committee, the Contractor and Auditor.

“Today we are signing a new project to upgrade the Water Supply System in Houma village. The water supply system was damaged by the Hunga-Tonga Hunga Ha‘apai volcanic eruption in January this year. We aim to improve it by installing two electric water pumps and replacing old main pipes,” said the Ambassador.

“We hope that this project will provide clean and safe water to the people of Houma Village.”

Japan’s GGP program to Tonga was suspended in the past two years due to the COVID-19 and the Ambassador announced that the signing ceremony also marked the return of GPP.

He acknowledged the cooperation by all the stakeholders for the effective implementation of development projects funded by the Government of Japan. “I hope that this project will play a great role in construction stronger and more resilient societies in the future, and that our friendship will continue to be enriched by our cooperation,” he added.

Hon. Tiofilusi Tiueti, Minister for Finance acknowledged Japan’s assistance. “These generous assistances have helped our local community’s development in achieving a more equitable distribution of economic and social benefits by addressing gaps including sanitation and health care, public welfare and education, improving access to clean and safe drinking water as we witness today.”

“ I would like to express our most sincere and heartfelt gratitude,” said the Minister.

Over 350 households and 2,000 population in Houma will benefit from this GGP assistance.
