A new intensive course in Tongan poetry titled “Faiva Ta‘anga: An Introduction to Tongan Poetry” will begin in the Department of Tongan Studies at Tonga International Academy (TIA) in mid-May 2018.

The performance art of poetry deals with language, where conflicts in human meanings are mediated and transformed from a situation of chaos to a state of order through sustained symmetry and harmony to create beauty.

A range of artistic and literary concepts and practices will be critically examined, such as different types of heliaki, punake and pulotu amidst many others.

Included herein will be such closely related performance (and material) arts as music, dance, courting, speech-giving and material art of speech-designing, utilised by poets, composers, chiefly orators, and preachers amongst many others.

This course is open to all who are interested in knowledge and skills in, and passion and urge for, the performance art of poetry.
