Tonga police open investigation into internet blackout Featured
22 February, 2019. Police in Tonga have opened an investigation into the severing of the country's fibre-optic internet cable last month.
It's still unclear what caused the cut, which plunged Tonga into a 12-day internet blackout and also hampered international phone calls.
Police Commissioner Stephen Caldwell told Matangi Tonga the investigation would assess whether the damage to the cable was deliberate or accidental.
The Police Minister, Māteni Tapueluelu, said last week there appeared to be a "human factor" behind the damage.
The cable's owner, government-owned Tonga Cable Ltd, completed its initial investigation last week.

It is not at all surprising that, for both probable political and commercial reasons, the critical and frightening level of corruption at the very core of government might have a factor to play in the internet blackout possibly leading to the disruption of the flow of information and creation of lucrative business dealings for (government-backed) private IT providers (like the good Samaritan first beating up the stranger then later bandaging him up!)
