Tonga resumes import tariffs as subsidies come to an end Featured
30 June 2022. Tariffs on all imports into Tonga are being resumed today after more than two years of duty free subsidies.
Since April 2020, various imports have been made duty free by Tonga's government to help the Kingdom deal with the financial fallout of the border being closed because of the pandemic.
The policy originally targeted tourism operators as part of a stimulus package.
After January's volcanic eruption and tsunami, duty usually applied to all non-commercial food and personal good imports was removed to allow for emergency donations.
