9 April, 2019. The Government of Japan and the Talafo‘ou Village Water Committee celebrated the completion of their Upgrade Water Supply System funded through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects, known as the GGP, on Friday, 5 April 2019.

His Excellency Mr. Tetsuya Ishii, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan and Mrs. Ishii attended the handover ceremony together with Hon. Dr. Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa, Minister for Finance and National Planning and People’s Representative for Tongatapu # 10, and Mr. Taufa’ao Lauaki, Representative of the estate holder.

Ambassador Ishii congratulated the completion of the project and emphasized that the Government of Japan highly prioritizes water supply projects in their development priorities. “We recognize that a clean and stable supply of water, as life line, is vital for our everyday life.”

“I heard that the Talafo’ou community has often suffered from water shortages due to the regular malfunctions of the old water pump. I am very pleased to acknowledge that the water supply system has been installed through GGP and households will now be receiving good quality water, every day,” stated the Ambassador.

Hon. Dr. Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa thanked the assistance from the Government of Japan whereby families now in Talafo’ou village will benefit from, contributing also to achieving the National Strategic Planning Framework in increasing access to quality water supply, and encouraging healthy living in communities.

Talafo’ou Village Water Committee sought for Japan’s assistance in 2018 to replace a deteriorating water supply system. The Project was formalized with a grant amount of USD$84,908 and funded replacements of the main pipes, installation of two 6 meter tank stands, a new water tank 5000 gallon, a diesel water pump system and a pump house with fence.

Japan’s GGP was introduced in 1990 to respond directly to the basic human needs at the grass-roots level and so far over 280 projects have been implemented in the Kingdom. The assistance epitomized Japan’s commitment to support efforts by the people and the Government of Tonga to ensure Human Security and continue to enrich the existing warm and close relations between the people and the Government of Japan and the people of the Kingdom of Tonga.
