Japan GGP handover for Malia Tupu ‘Imakulata Primary School Featured

16 November, 2018. The Government of Japan and the Malia Tupu ‘Imakulata Primary School celebrated the completion of a new building with two classrooms, funded through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects, GGP yesterday Thursday, 15 November, 2018.

His Excellency Mr. Tetsuya Ishii, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga congratulated the completion of the project during the handover ceremony at the school’s compound at Ma’ufanga.

His Eminence Bishop Soane Patita Cardinal Mafi conducted the blessing of the building, also present were the Representative from the Ministry of Finance and National Planning, Executive Members of the Parents and Teachers Association for Malia Tupu ‘Imakulata, Teachers, Parents and friends of the current students of the school.

“Today, I am happy that one more project will be handed over to help build the foundation of young citizens and cultivate every possibility in each pupil so that they will grow into the future of Tonga and the international society,” stated Ambassador Tetsuya Ishii.

He applauded the combined effort of the School, the Parents and Teachers Association, the Contractor and the Catholic Church to guarantee access to school and education for all.

Fr. Vehikite Malokula, on behalf of the Catholic Church, thanked the Ambassador for the significant assistance granted for the school.

Japan formalized its GGP for upgrading Malia Tupu ‘Imakulata Primary School in June this year, at a grant amounted to USD$ 89,178 enabling the construction of a new building with two classrooms, as well as a new toilet block.

Japan’s GGP was introduced in 1990 to respond directly to the basic human needs at the grass-roots level, and to date over 270 GGP projects have been handed over in Tonga.

The assistance epitomized Japan’s commitment to support efforts by the people and the Government of Tonga to ensure Human Security and continue to enrich the existing warm and close relations between the people and the Government of Japan and the people of the Kingdom of Tonga.
