New Vehicle for Princess Fusipala Hospital Featured
8 January 2020. Today’s event – the handing over of this new vehicle by the Minister of MEIDECC, Hon. Poasi M. Tei to the Minister of Health, Hon. Amelia Tu’ipulotu – marks the delivery of last Output and the overall completion of the Climate Resilience Sector Project (CRSP) that began its implementation in October 2014.
CRSP was funded by a USD 23.13m Grant Agreement between the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Tonga – under which ADB granted USD 19.75m and Government of Tonga’s contributed USD 3.88m equivalent in counter-financing – to deliver 5 different major Outputs – that would increase Tonga’s resilience in socio-economic and natural ecosystems to climate variability and change, and disaster risk.
The overall outcome of the Project was to strengthen the enabling environment for climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction at national and local levels.
This Project was driven from the Ministry of MEIDECC.
Under Output 4 – Increasing eco-system resilience and climate infrastructure investments – a new Hospital was constructed and recently commissioned by His Majesty King Tupou VI The Princess Fusipala Hospital last November for the Ha’apai Group.
The location of the new Princess Fusipala Hospital will ensure it is far less vulnerable from erosion and inundation from storm surges and potential Sea Level rise as compared to the old hospital at Niu’ui waterfront.
This vehicle handed over today is intended to assist in transporting the medical staff between the new hospital and the old staff quarter still at the Niu’ui compound and to assist with the general transportation requirement of the Hospital.
The successful partnership between the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga under this CRSP Grant Agreement has identified that opportunity for Technical Planning, Capacity Development, Strategic Monitoring and Evaluation, and Robust Governance Structure for future development sustainability.
