Training on Disaster Risk Management underway in Nuku'alofa

18 June, 2019. A three-day training, opened by the CEO for MEIDECC this morning at Tanoa International Dateline Hotel will equip participants with the necessary information and skills to achieve their assigned functions in disaster management.

The Pacific Community (SPC) has updated the content of the Introduction to Disaster Risk Management (IDRM) training of trainers programme to be current, relevant and applicable for accreditation.

Ma’u told participants that, “This training has now been accredited and participants that complete this training course will also be able to obtain recognised qualification from registered training institutions.”

“This course will empower you to be trainers and thereby training your people to properly assess your community’s various levels of hazards, vulnerabilities and risks and able to develop action plans that mitigate these risks and building resilience.”

He stated that the training is an important achievement for the seven Pacific Island states listed in The World Risk Index 2018 which include Vanuatu, Tonga, Solomon Islands, Papua New-Guinea, Kiribati, Tuvalu and Timor-Leste.

“This training is timely to help us ensure that our development agendas are achieved and sustainable. Incorporating risk analysis and mitigations measures in your sectors and community plans would minimise the losses and risks once disaster hits.”

The training is funded through the ACP-EU/SPC’s Building Safety and Resilience in the Pacific Project and facilitated by SPC.

Participating countries include Cook Islands, Niue, Samoa, Tuvalu and Tonga.
