Relief and recovery supplies from Tongans at the US Bay Area arrives in Nuku’alofa Featured
29 March, 2022. The Government of Tonga through MEIDECC received a container of relief supplies from the Tongan diaspora and families in the Bay Area of San Francisco, United States under a Joint Initiative ‘Tsunami Relief for Tonga’.
The initiative was organized by the Tongan Consulate General San Francisco Office, San Francisco Tongan Interfaith, Community Leaders Coalition, Regional Pacific Islander Task Force and Taulama for Tongans, to assist with the relief and recovery efforts.
The relief supplies included water, cleaning equipment, items for indoors and outdoors, COVID-19 safety gear and equipment, hygiene and kitchen kits, water tanks and chainsaws.
Deputy Prime Minister & Minister for MEIDECC, Hon. Poasi Tei expressed his gratitude for the assistance and support provided from families, friends and various organizations in the Bay Area.
The container was opened by the Director of NEMO, Mr Mafua Maka at the NEMO Warehouse, Matatoa on the 26th March, 2022, to confirm receipt of contents to assist with the distribution planning.
The supplies will be distributed by NEMO to the affected families from the HTHH disaster.
NEMO together with the Ministry of Health will ensure that all health protocols are observed during the distribution of the supplies.
This is the first shipment to arrive Tonga late last week from the Tongan diaspora and families in the United States.
To date, the Tongan communities and diaspora in American Samoa, Australia, Fiji, Tahiti, New Zealand and the US have generously donated relief supplies of food, water and other items to families that were affected by the HTHH disaster on January, 15
