Princess Latufuipeka Tuku’aho visits the Ministry of Fisheries Featured
10 July, 2019. Her Royal Highness, Princess Latufuipeka Tuku’aho, High Commissioner of the Kingdom of Tonga to the Commonwealth of Australia, Papua New Guinea and Ambassador of Tonga to the Kingdom of Thailand, visited the Ministry of Fisheries on the 25th of June 2019.
The main purpose of the visit was to hold discussions about the tuna industry and potential farming of tuna in Tonga.
The catches from tuna fisheries in Tongan waters vary from time to time due to many factors, in particular the impacts of climate change.
The catches for 2017/18 declined significantly. However, toward the end of 2018, catch rates from tuna fisheries went up quickly, resulting in big increase in export in terms of volume and value.
To ensure sustainability in the production from tuna fisheries, farming of tuna could be the best solution.
Her Royal Highness, Princess Latufuipeka Tuku’aho expressed interest of tuna farmers from Thailand that wish to invest and collaborate with the Ministry of Fisheries.
The CEO for Ministry of Fisheries, Dr. Tu’ikolongahau Halafihi led the discussions alongside the Deputy CEO’s. He expressed his interest in tuna farming and the potential it has for fisheries development in Tonga.
The CEO acknowledged with thanks and sincere appreciation the leadership of Her Royal Highness, Princess Latufuipeka Tukuáho in this new initiative for farming of tuna in Tonga.
