Tonga and Japan sign grant contract for three new project
20 February, 2023. Japanese Ambassador to Tonga H.E Mr MUNENAGA Kensaku and the Minister for Finance, Revenue and Customs Hon Tiofilusi Tiueti signed contracts for three new projects funded by the Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots (GGP) on February 14 at the Ministry of Finance’s Conference Room.
The three projects signed include;
- Water supply system for the new settlement of Kanokupolu Village at Matatoa with a grant amount of US$91,399
- New classroom building for the Free Weslyan Church Maamaloa Akoteu (beside Queen Salote College) with a grant amount of US$83,971; and
- Improvement of water supply system in the Village of Puke with a grant amount of US$ 79,326
H.E Mr. MUNENAGA Kensaku said, the first project is part of the Paletu’a Project, relocation and settlement of the residents of Kanokupolu after Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcanic eruption and tsunami last year.
“We are happy and even proud to be able to participate in this disaster-poof resettlement project so that we won’t repeat similar tragedies anymore. The devastating aftermath in Kanokupolu brought sad memories as Japan also is very prone to natural disasters.”
He hoped that the second project will provide a safer and better educational environment for students. He also urged parents and the supervision of the PTA to take good care of the new two classrooms after its completion so that it can benefit the present and the future students of the school.
“The third project is to upgrade the water supply system in Puke Village. Since the current water supply system is not enough for the growing population, we decided to enlarge the size of the water pipes in Puke and also to expand the supply area. I hope that all families will have better access to clean and safe water 24 hours a day.”
Mr. MUNENAGA also thanked the Minister for Finance, Revenue and Customs Hon Tiufilsi Tiueti for his ministry’s continuous support of Japan’s GGP projects over the years and looked forward for the effective implementation of current and future projects.
