24 March 2022. On 10 March 2022, Mr. Viliami Vaʻinga Tōnē presented to Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary J. May Simon, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, his Letter of Credence as High Commissioner of the Kingdom of Tonga to Canada during a virtual credential ceremony at Rideau Hall (official residence).

There were eight other new heads of mission to Canada who presented their credentials virtually during this ceremony.

High Commissioner Tōnē conveyed His Majesty King Tupou VI’s warm greetings to Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary J. May Simon and reassured her that the relations of friendship and good understanding, which so happily exist between Canada and the Kingdom of Tonga, will be maintained and strengthened.

Her Excellency gratefully acknowledged the greetings from His Majesty and she expressed confidence in seeing Canada and Tonga working closely together.

High Commissioner Tōnē is Tonga’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York and holds concurrent accreditation to Canada.

The Kingdom of Tonga and Canada established diplomatic relations on 11 June 1971.
