Dr Siale ‘Akau’ola has been re-appointed as CEO for Health Featured

Dr Siale ‘Akau’ola of Kanokupolu and Kolomotu’a has been re-appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the Ministry of Health following an official decision made by the Public Service Commission with effect from the date of signing of the Chief Executive Officer contract (i.e. 16 May, 2019) for a period of four (4) years.
As Chief Executive Officer, Dr ‘Akau’ola has the responsibility of planning and directing the programs and activities of the Tonga Health Service to promote the health of the people of Tonga within defined financial and other resources. He will also be responsible for ensuring the delivery of a comprehensive, balanced, coordinated, effective and efficient health service in Tonga.
Dr ‘Akau’ola holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pathology (1995) from the University of Otago, New Zealand and a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (1984) from the University of Papua New Guinea, Papua New Guinea. He also holds a Certificate in Plastic and Reconstructive surgery (1989) from Australia.
His career in the public service began with his appointment as a Medical Officer in the Ministry of Health in 1986. Throughout the years, he was promoted to several senior management positions within the Ministry of Health including Medical Officer Special Grade, Senior Medical Officer and Medical Superintendent.
He was later appointed as Chief Executive Officer for Health in 2009 where he continued to serve three (3) consecutive terms until the end of his contract on 15 May, 2019.
He is currently the Chairman of several professional committees such as the National Committee for the control of NCD, Mental Health Advisory Committee, National Drugs and Medical Supplies Committee, National Health Development Committee Technical Sub committee and also the Health, Nutrition and WASH cluster committee.
He is also a member of the Health Emergency Management Committee, Tonga National Qualifications and Accreditation Board (TNQAB) and the National Emergency Management Committee.
The Public Service Commission congratulates Dr Siale ‘Akau’ola on his re-appointment as Chief Executive Officer for Health and looks forward to his continued contributions to the Government of Tonga.
