Japanese Government 2017 MEXT Scholarship Recipient, Congratulated

13 March, 2017. H. E Mr. Yukio Numata, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga congratulated recipients of the Government of Japan’s MEXT Scholarship for 2017, Ms. Sivoki Lia Latu Fonua and Ms. Sandy Siutiti Tu’ipulotu at a dinner at his residence, on Thursday 9 March. 

The Ambassador encouraged the recipients that the only way to pursue their academic studies in Japan, is to adjust and enjoy the language and culture challenges. He acknowledged their determination in applying for the scholarship and wish that they be successful in their studies.

The scholarship recipients also heard experiences shared by previous MEXT recipients of Tonga, invited to the dinner. Ms. Sivoki Lia Latu Fonua will be taking a Research Scholarship at the Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University to complete her two years Master’s Degree (M.A) in Asia Pacific Studies. Her interest is in policy to regulate cybercrime and hopes to be a policy analyst.

Sivoki graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce in Human Resource and International Business & Marketing from the University of the South Pacific and worked with Tonga Communication’s Cooperation, TCC. Ms. Sandy Siutiti Tu’ipulotu is awarded also a Research Scholarship at the Hokkaido University taking a Japanese Language course in the first six months before completing her Master’s Degree in Environmental Earth Science.

Sandy graduated with a Bachelor in Tourism Management from Lincoln University, Christchurch New Zealand and worked at Tonga’s, Ministry of Tourism. The Government of Japan offers various scholarship annually under MEXT, and students from Tonga are eligible to apply for Research, Undergraduate, Specialized Training College Students and Teacher Training Programs. Tongan students have been successful recipients since the first MEXT Scholarship awarded, in 1995. 

Both scholarship recipients are to depart for Japan, first week of April 2017.
