Tonga National Museum will open at the Queen Salote Memorial Hall

29 October, 2020. The Culture & Heritage Division of the Ministry of Tourism is pleased to announce that the Tonga National Museum will be opened by HRH Salote Pilolevu Mafile’o Tuita at the Queen Salote Memorial Hall on Friday, 30th October 2020 at 2pm.

Reviving the National Museum has been an ongoing project since 2017 with the support of Ms. Kolokesa Mahina – Tuai of the Auckland Museum and Master Carvers; Tui’one Pulotu & Steven Fehoko and others. A feasibility study was conducted by surveying secondary students throughout Tonga and the survey showed that there was a need to re-establish the National Museum formerly located at the Tonga National Centre at Tofoa and was funded by the Government of Japan.

The National Museum will display artifacts from the Kingdom’s archives as well as feature works of both past and present Tongan artists. Curators for the National Museum will be staff of the Culture & Heritage Division. This project is self-funded by the Ministry of Tourism.

The Ministry of Tourism would like to acknowledge the Auckland Museum for their contributions to the Tonga National Museum delivered by the New Zealand High Commission, the Government of Japan as well as our Tongan artists for their support.
