Paradoxically, it is thought that, in Moana Oceania generally, and in Tonga specifically, people walk forward into the past and walk backward into the future, both in the ever-changing, conflicting present, where the illusive already-taken-place past and the elusive yet-to-take-place future are constantly mediated in the ongoing social process.

Historically, it means that, because the past has stood the test of timespace, it must be put in front of people as guidance and given that the future is yet-to-come, it must be placed in the back of people, informed by refined past knowledge, skills and experiences, in both the present, where they are permanently arbitrated in the social process.
