Niuatoputapu connects to high-speed internet through new commissioned Satellite Featured
26 July, 2019. The Member of Parliament for the Niuas, Hon Vatau Hui commissioned the Tongan Government and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Satellite Project in Niuatoputapu on Wednesday July 24 aiming to connect the island to much faster internet connection and for emergency communications through a satellite type dubbed as VSAT (very small aperture terminal).
The newly installed VSAT at the Government’s Representative office, offers free and high-speed internet connection to the people of Niuatoputapu for the next 10 months with a speed of 20 megabit per second (20mbps).
Hon Vatau Hui said, “Niuatoputapu is fortunate to be part of this project. With the VSAT in place we hope that this service will improve communications in the island. This equipment can also boost development in areas such as economic, social, education, fisheries, agriculture, tourism, health and Met service.”
He said that more than 90% of Tonga’s population access to fast and affordable internet through the fibre optic cable specifically Tongatapu, Ha’apai, and Vava’u. This project ensures Niuatoputapu will get access to faster Internet as well.
This is the second project of the same nature donated by the ITU, whereas the first was a VSAT Internet connection to the Niuatoputapu High School.
TCC has also been providing Internet service to Niuatoputapu as well as smart mobile phones service.
Hon. Vatau Hui also urged the Government for continued maintenance support in order to successfully sustain this worthy project for the people of Niuatoputapu.
The Minister for MEIDECC, Hon. Poasi Tei and his staff who arranged the project with the ITU, together with the Government Representative, Mr. Sione Feingatau Iloa, with other guests were present at the occasion.
Hon Vatau Hui, Director of Communications Mr ‘Alifeleti Tuihalamaka and MEIDECC staff will continue to Niuafo’ou to commission a similar VSAT Internet service donated by the ITU, on Friday 26th July, 2019.
