State of emergency doesn't make sense says MP Featured
19 March, 2018. An MP in Tonga has joined the chorus of voices speaking out against a state of emergency and associated curfew in the capital of Nuku'alofa.
Last Monday the government extended the state of emergency that has been in force since Cyclone Gita hit the country five weeks ago.
Police also said they would continue to enforce a curfew around the Nuku'alofa CBD.
Local operators and the Chamber of Commerce have complained about the negative financial impact on businesses and their employees.
Former Deputy Prime Minister Siaosi Sovaleni agreed the extension was holding the recovery back for some.
He said the government had not given a satisfactory reason for the move.
"We got about 90 percent of the electricity up and running. Most of the debris has been collected and disposed of so it is hard to actually get a reason why we should be extending the state of emergency, because extending it actually gives them [the government] that special powers that I don't believe is needed right now, one month after the cyclone."

SECOND THAT MOTION MARK HANSEN...I may add that they welcomed Cyclone Gita so they can hide and go into hibernation like Grizzly bears and do nothing.
Or perhaps they're afraid of coming out of hiding to face reality because they don't know what to do next. -
This government is so obsessed with power politics and trivial issues that they ignore what is important to the people and the country. In the midst of the humanitarian and recovery efforts after the most devastating cyclone, they chose to take a back seat and push their political agenda. While the education system is going down the road to nowhere and school managements are struggling to give some kind of meaningful education to students, the Minister of Education worries about girls playing rugby. I'm now beginning to believe the rumour from inside the ministry and Mrs Minister is driving the ministry. She should be moved to another ministry for obvious reasons, similar situation to Mrs Lavu and her PA.
CDU, it's time to get rid of the self-proclaimed queen of MET!!
We really need divine intervention to get our country back on track.
And while everyone focuses on rebuilding homes, farms, businesses, etc., the pm goes hotel crawling, his latest hobby. SHAME!!!
